The Arabian Nights art prints by Maxfield Parrish are completely different from our collection of art prints of the Arabian Nights by Milo Winter. Both are fine artists, with very different styles. One interesting feature of these prints is that they were both taken from the same translation of the Arabic originals of The Arabian Nights or better known centuries ago as ‘Tales of a Thousand and One Nights’.
The editors realized the popularity of this book relied heavily on the realistic illustrations by Maxfield Parrish, which are rich, colorful, and bold. Really bold, with over the top realism mixed with magic and fantasy. Many of the favorite characters appear in these prints, from Sinbad to Aladdin and the Magic Lamp, on to Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves.
If your children have not been introduced to these magical characters and their homelands, this is art and history roled into one. And what better teacher than a master at art, Mr. Maxfield Parrish.
The Arabian Nights was edited by Kate Douglas Wiggin and Nora A. Smith, and of course illustrated by Maxfield Parrish. The book was published by Charles Scribner’s Sons and copyrighted in 1909.
