The images in this book are again celebrating Elizabeth Gordon's love of children and nature, this time with fruits and vegies. Ms. Gordon's ideas in this book are more imaginative than those in her Flower Children book, because fruits and vegetables are very different in shape and weight than flowers. Vintage artist M.T. Ross did very fetching fruits and vegetable paintings, to get the author's ideas to come to life.
These fine old prints are of children dressed in a costume of the plant in each poem, very similar but funnier than the vintage prints in Flower Children. Seasonal prints are also available, such as pumpkin, Indian corn, cranberry, strawberry prints and many others.
A really hilarious illustration the String Beans print, shows toddler aged, costumed children climbing poles, as pole beans do. If you are looking for something goofy, take a look at the Button Mushrooms print.
The book, Mother Earth's Children, the Frolics of the Fruits and the Vegetables, is the fourth in a series by the author, Elizabeth Gordon. The illustrator is M. T. Ross and the publisher is again, P.F. Volland and Co., Chicago. Copyright 1914.
