The beautiful prints found in The New Natural History are great prints of animals, lots and lots of animals. The prints are part of the collection put together by Dr. Richard Lydekker, a top naturalist of the day. There are 75 color prints to choose from, stretching from the anemones and sharks of the sea, to the elephants and lions of Africa. The color palette that the illustrator used remained natural and understated or rich and eye popping, depending on the animals rendered. Very well done stuff.
We chose to reproduce only the color prints because there were just so many. The color prints have reproduced better than any of the 1600 black and white engravings in the twelve volumes. Two prints that are favorites are the Macaws and South African Giraffes. The Macaws are very natural looking and playful in their habitat, and the Giraffes appear friendly and approachable, plus they have gorgeous eyes. If anyone you know truly enjoys Mother Nature, these prints showcase some of her work at its best.
